Support for Schools

Welcome to our schools section, here you will find some resources that parents and educational establishments  may find useful in supporting a child with hydrocephalus and their education.

Children with hydrocephalus can struggle within education settings. As well as the associated risks of shunt failure and damage to shunts; there can be also be difficulties with cognition, behaviour and social skills. These difficulties can lead to isolation, low self-esteem, and lack of educational progress.

The government says “An education provider has a duty to make ‘reasonable adjustments’ to make sure disabled students are not discriminated against.”  It is important for schools, parents and healthcare professionals to work collaboratively and inclusively to achieve the best outcomes for children with hydrocephalus.

All local authorities should have their SEND local offer on their website. This should give online information and support for ages 0-25 with Special Educational needs and/or disability.

Harry’s Hat can offer training for schools; please contact info@harrys-hat.org for more information.
