Most children with hydrocephalus will have a shunt to help manage their hydrocephalus. This page highlights two of the most used companies here in the UK. It is important to understand what type of shunt your child has. This information should be shared when your child is discharged following shunt insertion surgery. If you don’t know then please ask your neurosurgeon.
Whilst we don’t endorse any company, we do feel it is important to signpost you to these so you can learn more about them and access any relevant information contained on their websites which might be helpful.
The text below for both companies has be provided by the companies who have checked the content and approved the wording for this page.
B. Braun and MIETHKE are two companies who work together to improve the lives of hydrocephalus patients. MIETHKE develops and produces shunts for hydrocephalus treatment. B. Braun help deliver them to hospitals all over the world. Our common goal is to give patients a chance to lead a life as normal as possible.
MIETHKE shunts use gravitational technology. This technology helps to balance pressure in the brain regardless of body position. Some valves can even be adjusted once implanted. This way treatment can be tailored to individual requirements, or the shunt can be adjusted in case symptoms change over time.
We are here to help you. If you need more information about life with a shunt, you can find our patient education website here: https://www.miethke.com/en/hydrocephalus/living-with-hydrocephalus
If you have a MIETHKE shunt and have a specific question, please contact Emily Burke, B. Braun UK Product Manager in Neurosurgery.
