Jersey:  Caz’s Story.

Harry has been desperate to go on plane, so we choose Jersey for our holiday this year.  It is a short 40 min flight from Heathrow, so perfect plane ‘journey’ without the long-haul!

Jersey is beautiful and had we had lovely weather we could have been anywhere in the world- the beaches are quiet, sandy, and stretch for as far as you can see.  The weather wasn’t kind (boo!!) so we did the castle, where Harry got to dress up as a knight, the War Tunnels and the Botanical Gardens, which despite looking like a Garden Centre from the outside is a beautiful space, complete with kids’ play area and a fantastic French Creperie.

Should we have needed then Jersey does have an Hospital with an A&E department located in St Helier.  General Hospital, The Parade, St Helier, Jersey. JE1 3QS.

Jersey, however, is not part of the UK and although it does have a reciprocal arrangement with the UK in terms of emergency healthcare.  Ongoing treatment or care is not (usually) covered.  So, Travel insurance is a must.

Top tips:

  • Travel insurance is vital.
  • Bus travel on the island is good, very frequent, and affordable.  However, we found that the buses get busy so worth wearing a Sunflower Lanyard if you want to make sure your child can get a seat.
  • In an airlift situation Southampton Children’s Hospital would most likely be the nearest.
  • We took Harry’s shunt information pack with his Emergency Shunt Form (available on our website) and lists of the medication he has taken and is also allergic too.
  • https://www.beachability.org/ Jersey has several locations for Beach Wheelchairs.
